Spectra of Amine-Chloranil Complexes

Abstract

SMITH1 has shown that the spectra of some methyl substituted aniline-chloranil charge-transfer complexes contain two absorption bands not exhibited by the individual components of the complexes. One of the absorption bands is an intense broad band with maximum absorption in the region of 600–800 mµ. This band is thought to be the charge-transfer band of the complex. The other band is an intense band with a well-defined maximum in the region of 320–380 mµ. McGlynn2 has interpreted this band as being a charge-transfer band of the complex also and has suggested that methyl-substituted aromatic molecules have two similar ionization potentials which give rise to two charge-transfer bands. Evans3 has shown that the spectrum of oxygen-perturbed dimethylaniline has a shoulder with maximum absorption at 380 mµ. He has interpreted this shoulder as being due to the superposition of two charge-transfer bands corresponding to the two ionization potentials of the methyl-substituted aromatic molecule suggested by McGlynn.
