Abstract
LITTLE is known about the effect of the absence of carbon dioxide on the metabolism of spermatozoa. In 1930 Harvey1 suggested that the inability of Arbacia punctulata spermatozoa to survive during a 4-hr, incubation period in an atmosphere of hydrogen might be due to the absence of carbon dioxide. To our knowledge this suggestion has not been investigated nor has a similar observation and suggestion been reported for mammalian spermatozoa.
