Origin of the Lactate Dehydrogenase Isoenzyme Pattern found in the Serum of Patients having Primary Muscular Dystrophy

Abstract

THE electrophoretic pattern of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) isoenzymes has repeatedly been determined in human serum for specific detection of tissue necrosis. Indeed, it is generally accepted that the necrotic tissue impresses its LDH pattern on the basic distribution of LDH isoenzymes as found in the serum. Thus in hepatitis the electrophoreticaliy slowest serum LDH (LDH5) (for nomenclature see ref. 1) markedly increases as it constitutes the dominant fraction of liver LDH. In myocardial infarction especially LDH1 (the most rapid fraction) rises as it corresponds to the dominant LDH isoenzyme of human heart muscle.
