Abstract
COLLAGEN contains a very small amount of histidine in the order of 2 : 419 residues of amino-acids1. Hæmoglobin of red cells has as much as 8 per cent histidine2. Autoradiography with tritiated histidine appears to offer an adequate means of examining this amino-acid in the skeletal system in spite of its low concentration. Such an investigation is of interest from several aspects, namely: (1) an adequate and specific histochemical method for histidine is lacking; (2) it would be of basic significance to ascertain whether intracellular histidine is utilized in bone and cartilage matrix production.
