Abstract
RECENTLY, an unknown amino-acid excreted in the urine by two mentally defective children1 was identified as argininosuccinic acid (ASA)2. This is unstable in weakly acid aqueous solutions and cyclizes3. More recently Westall4 has shown that under these conditions two separate types of anhydride (B and C) are formed, rapidly at high but more slowly at room temperatures.
