Abstract
THE procedures for the estimation of enzymes of the urea cycle reported by Brown and Cohen1 have made it possible to study quantitatively the effect of hormones on the individual reactions of the urea cycle. These authors have recently shown that, in rat liver, the condensing enzyme of the arginine synthetase system is rate-limiting and will thus be a pacemaker for the whole system2. It is at such rate-limiting reactions that metabolic control might be exerted, and it therefore seemed of particular interest to measure the activity of this enzyme under conditions where there is a marked change in nitrogen metabolism and the production of urea.
