Abstract
SEASONAL acclimatization of oxygen consumption to temperature has been demonstrated in poikilotherms by many authors, and its profound ecological significance is widely recognized1–5. But most such investigations are restricted mainly to marine organisms of cold and temperate zones. Comparatively little attention has been paid to such seasonal compensatory changes in oxygen consumption in tropical, freshwater and amphibious animals and much less in the terrestrial forms. Except for the work of Vernberg6 on intertidal crabs, nothing has been reported of the seasonal fluctuations of respiration in any tropical poikilotherm.
