Abstract
THE administration of cortisone and certain other C-21 and 19-nor-steroids increases final yields of influenza virus in chick embryos by inhibition of viral interference1. Paradoxically, the rate of viral synthesis is reduced2 at the same time. Interferon, a substance produced by cells inoculated with interfering virus, has been proposed as the mediator of interference3. Therefore, it was important to determine whether cortisone and other steroids capable of inhibiting the induction of interference might influence either the production of interferon or its effect.
