Abstract
IN 1949 it was demonstrated by Otto Krayer1 that the heart-rate-increasing action of adrenaline could be selectively antagonized by veratramine through a direct inhibitory action on the pacemaker of the heart. Since then it has become established that secondary amine bases of steroid nature among veratrum alkaloids all share this property in common and the term ‘anti-accelerator’ was given to this property2. More recently this property has been recognized as occurring in several types of compounds other than veratrum alkaloids3,4.
