Abstract
EXTENSIVE quarrying is being done on the hill slopes west of Kabbal (12° 30′ N., 77° 18′ E., situated about 40 miles south-south-west of Bangalore), and so fresh surfaces were available for examination. Peninsular gneiss is the prevailing rock of this region. It is thinly foliated and often highly contorted. The gneiss is generally biotitic ; but there are hornblendic layers and streaks.
