Incorporation of 5-Bromouracil into Transforming Principle of Bacillus subtilis and its Biological Effects

Abstract

THE incorporation of 5-bromouracil into deoxyribonucleic acids of bacteria and bacteriophage1 raised a problem concernnig the biological effects of such incorporation. It has been shown that at least some of the cells of Escherichia coli containing 5-bromouracil in their deoxyribonucleic acid remain alive2. Further evidence on this subject was obtained by the demonstration of the mutagenic effect of 5-bromouracil3; these results also indicated that 5-bromouracil was incorporated into molecules of deoxyribonucleic acid that functioned as heredity determinants. Similar results have been obtained with bacteriophage.4
