Abstract
SMALL amounts of fatty acids containing an odd number of carbon atoms have been isolated from the depot fat of ruminants1–5. The development of the gas chromatography procedure for analysis of the methyl esters of the fatty acids enabled the detection of trace amounts of the odd-numbered acids in the fats of non-ruminants6,7. Since fatty acids containing an odd number of carbon atoms presumably arise from the condensation of propionate and acetate derivatives8, it would seem possible to increase these acids in the depot fats of animals by feeding propionate. This was achieved in the experiment reported herein.
