Influence of Temperature and Light on Reproduction in Male Rats

Abstract

LIGHT has been considered a gonad-stimulating factor1, which most probably induces its effect via the pituitary in some animals2. It has been reported, though, that some animals respond to light only at a certain season of the year and are refractory to it at other seasons3. Autumn breeders, on the other hand, as the goat and sheep, breed at the time of diminishing light4. This difference could probably be due to variations in environmental temperature. Another point is that light experiments have usually been done with female animals and with birds. The present investigation was planned to study the effects of temperature and light on reproductive performance in male rats.
