Abstract
EXUDATIVE diathesis and encephalomalacia, two of the outstanding symptoms of vitamin E deficiency in chicks, are much promoted by dietary polyenoic fatty acids1,2. It has recently been shown3 that, in certain circumstances, the former can occur even when the diet is free from polyenoic fatty acids ; further, it can be prevented by a trace of ‘Selenite’4 5. To our knowledge, encephalomalacia has never been observed with diets not containing polyenoic fatty acids, and this symptom is not prevented by ‘Selenite’6.
