The TiFe2O5—Ti2FeO5 Solid Solution Series

Abstract

IT has already been reported1,2 that a stable compound having a chemical composition near TiO2.Fe2O3 can be produced by ultimate oxidation of the ilmenite–hæmatite mineral series, xFeTiO3.(1−x)Fe2O3, or titanomagnetites, yFe2TiO4.(1−y)Fe3O4. Very little is known, however, about the chemical composition, crystal structure, magnetic properties or other physical and chemical properties of this ultimate oxidation product. In the course of comprehensive research on crystallographic and magnetic properties of the FeO—Fe2O3—TiO2 ternary system, we have succeeded in synthesizing the TiO2.Fe2O3—2TiO2. FeO solid solution series, and have examined the magnetic and crystallographic properties of samples of it. It seems that the TiO2.Fe2O3—2TiO2.FeO series comprises, together with titanomagnetite and the ilmenite–hæmatite series, the three significant solid solution lines in the FeO—Fe2O3—TiO2 ternary system diagram.
