Abstract
MOLYBDENUM has been identified as a constituent of nitrate reductase in some bacteria1, fungi2–4 and higher plants5, and the micro-nutrient was shown to undergo a valence change involving Mo6+ and Mo5+ during the enzymatic reduction of nitrate6. Apart from its role in nitrate reductase, it is known that molybdenum is also important for other metabolic processes in plants. When ammonium is the sole source of nitrogen, nitrate reductase does not usually form in plants, and the molybdenum requirement, although considerably reduced, is not completely eliminated.
