Remission of Rat Lymphocytic Leukæmia 8 following Intravenous Administration of 4-(p-Diethylaminostyryl)quinoline Dihydrochloride

Abstract

EARLIER studies1 indicated that oral administration of certain styryl quinolines resulted in complete absorption of lymphoma 8 growing in inbred rats of the strain of its spontaneous origin. The neo-plastie cells of this lymphoma appear in the bloodstream of the host animal as early as 18 hr. after subcutaneous implantation2 and increase greatly, in some instances, to as many as 100,000 per c.mm. in the eighteen to twenty-one days before death of the rat. Intraperitoneal injection of 1 ml. of this lymphogenous blood into normal rats of the same strain produces a lymphocytic blood picture which bears a resemblance to certain types of clinical lymphocytic leukæmia. This lymphocytic leukæmia (rat lymphocytic leukæmia 8) is always fatal within twelve to twenty days. In view of their anti-lymphoma action, it seemed of interest to determine whether styryl quinolines, intravenously administered, would have any effect on this type of leukæmia in rats.
