Visible Spectrum of Potassium Ethyl I-Methoxypicrate and of Related Compounds

Abstract

THE structure of the product obtained by Meisenheimer1 from potassium methoxide and s-tri-nitroanisole and from potassium ethoxide and s-trinitrophenetole which depended on these two products being identical has been confirmed by infra-red spectroscopy2. The product appears to be the ion (I). The visible spectra of the products obtained from these two reactions have now been measured. The spectra are identical. There are three maxima in the region 390–600 mµ, namely, at 420 mµ (ɛ = 27,000) ; at 478 mµ (ɛ = 16,500) ; and at 494 mµ (ɛ = 17,000).
