Abstract
IN preliminary studies on the causes of variability in pure lines of Drosophila melanogaster, using the quantitative character of sternopleural chæta number, it was noted that a relationship existed between chæta number and time of hatching. This could have been due entirely to changes taking place in the culture media1,2, but experiments have now shown that some part of this variability ia already determined before the eggs are laid and is, furthermore, inherited.
