Inhibition of Glucose Use in Muscle Extracts by Lipoproteins

Abstract

FOLLOWING the demonstration that the serum of severely diabetic rats inhibited the uptake of glucose by the rat diaphragm1 and the later finding that such inhibition was dependent on the lipoprotein content of the serum2, it was decided to test the effect of lipoprotein fractions obtained from diabetic plasma, the anterior pituitary and other tissues on the utilization of glucose by cell-free muscle extracts.
