Abstract
AQUEOUS extracts of acetone-dried sheep brain form hydroxamic acid from L-glutamic acid and hydroxylamine in the presence of adenosine triphosphate1. It was found that this reaction is inhibited by DL-N-(γ-glutamyl)-ethanolamine. Molar ratios of DL-N-(γ-glutamyl)-ethanolamine to L-glutamic acid varying from 2 : 1 to 10 : 1 gave inhibitions of 10–50 per cent. On the other hand, DL-α-methylglutamic acid not only did not inhibit the reaction between L-glutamic acid and hydroxylamine, but could be substituted for glutamic acid in this reaction, apparently with the formation of α-methylglutamohydroxamic acid.
