Abstract
LITTLE is known about the inner structure of red blood cells. There are two main theories. One considers that the interior is a sponge-like network formed by structural proteins with the hæmoglobin in its intermicellar spaces. The other considers the erythrocyte as a balloon, containing free hæmoglobin in solution. Theoretical considerations, however1,2, have shown that the blood pigment must be densely packed, and its degree of freedom is small, as follows from X-ray diffusion studies3.
