Abstract
THE counter used in this investigation contained an anthracene phosphor (from Harshaw Chemical Co.) 2 cm. × 3 cm. × 3 cm. between two photo-multiplier tubes (R.C.A.5819). The pulses from the multipliers were amplified about 200 times and led to a coincidence stage of a type described by Morton and Sherwin1. In this way the background counts due to dark-current pulses were effectively suppressed. With the high voltage used, about 900 volts, the counter gave no pulses without the phosphor.
