Angular Distributions of Protons from the Reaction 12C(d,p)13C

Abstract

RECENT studies1,2 of the angular distributions of protons from (d,p) reactions, produced by bombardment with 8-MeV. deuterons, have revealed very pronounced structures in the distributions, particularly at small angles. To account for these structures, one would have to assume contributions from angular momenta of the incident deuterons much higher than would be compatible with an ordinary reaction proceeding via a compound nucleus. Butler3 has shown that this difficulty could be removed by the assumption of a stripping process of the deuteron, in which the neutron is captured by the nucleus and the proton moves on with the balance of energy and momentum. This explanation not only accounts well for the observed structure in the angular distributions, but also makes possible the calculation from these distributions of the spins and parities of corresponding states of the residual nuclei. Such a possibility adds great interest to the study of angular distributions in reactions produced by deuterons of sufficiently high energy; the present communication deals with such a study in the case of the 12C(d,p)13C reaction.
