Stimulation by Insulin of in vitro Fat Synthesis by Lactating Mammary Gland Slices

Abstract

A ROLE for insulin in the regulation of fatty acid synthesis from acetate seemed to be suggested by the work of Bloch and Kramer1 who, using acetate labelled with carbon-14, reported that the utilization of acetate for fatty acid synthesis by rat liver slices in vitro was enhanced by insulin when pyruvate was also present in the medium but not if the medium contained acetate alone or plus glucose. However, Bloch2 afterwards reported failure regularly to reproduce these results, and the general significance of his original observations therefore seemed doubtful.
