Hyperfine Structure of the Paramagnetic Resonance Spectrum of Divalent Cobalt: Experimental

Abstract

FOLLOWING a privates communication from Dr. R. P. Penrose1 of his discovery at Leyden of a hyperfine structure in the paramagnetic resonance spectrum of a diluted copper Tutton salt, a systematic survey has been oarried out on a similar salt of cobalt. The divalent cobalt ion is interesting because the orbital momentum of the electrons is only incompletely quenched, and previous work2 had shown that the effectives g-value is abnormally high. The spin lattice relaxation time is so short that an appreciable broadening of the lines is produced at 90° K., and most of the experiments have therefore been made at 20°
