Abstract
ALL techniques employed for the estimation of the hæmolytic activity of saponins are minor variations of Kobert's classic dilutions method1. This empirical estimation is subject to great variability, different bloods giving markedly different values. A reference product proposed for standardizing results was found unsuitable2. A volumetric method was proposed for digitonin by Schmidt-Tomé3; but it is tedious and seems unsuitable for slow-reacting saponins.
