Abstract
IN a vegetation devoid of vascular plants, as the antarctic continent is generally believed to be, the lichens assume quite unusual importance. The meticulous stmdy of the lichens of Antarctica and the subantarctic islands recently published (B.A.N.Z., Antarctic Research Expedition Report. Vol. 7, Lichens and Lichen Parasites, by C. W. Dodge. Adelaide, 1948) is therefore a very significant contribution to knowledge of these remote and inhospitable regions, incomplete as it must necessarily be.
