Abstract
KNOWLEDGE concerning compound nuclei can be derived mainly from two groups of experiments. The study of individual levels yields information as to the values that the total and partial widths can assume. Where in one nucleus several neighbouring levels can be observed separately, individual level distances can be determined. A great number of measurements of this second type have been made. They show that level-widths and -distances vary over a considerable range.
