Abstract
CHOICE of fixative is a very important factor in the study of cytology as well as pathology. It has been known for years that wax sections of cells show some shrinkage, and the critical period for this change was supposed to be during dehydration and dealcoholization. That is why several modifications of dehydrating and clearing agents have been suggested and tried. No attempt has been made to find whether the entire amount of shrinkage is brought about by alcohols and clearing oils, or whether fixatives are also responsible to a certain extent. Medawar has studied penetration of fixatives. I have endeavoured to find out how far fixatives contribute to the shrinkage of cells during the period of fixation.
