Abstract
THE problem of the origin and chemical nature of lanosterol—the characteristic substance so far observed only in the wool-grease of the sheep—was originally solved by classifying it as a sterol. Recent evidence1,2 indicates a more probable connexion with the tri-cyclic terpenes such as α-elemolic acid and with the minor yeast sterol cryptosterol.
