Abstract
A CHARACTERISTIC of the present age of the machine is the increasing use which is made in industry and elsewhere of the services of men and women with scientific or technical qualifications. This tendency was sufficiently apparent in peace-time, and the outbreak of war has intensified the demand. The active competition between the fighting services and industry for trained workers has already given cause for anxiety, which is reflected in the recent ‘calling up’ regulations referring to the ‘reservation’ of students of science and technology at school or university.
