Abstract
IN a communication in NATURE1, Riley and Fankuchen claim to have disproved the structure C2 predicted for the insulin molecule2 by means of a Patterson projection of the cyclol skeletons. Great weight has been given to this result3,4. My opinion was5, and is, that the claim to have produced from the (C–C–N)288 skeletons arranged at a tilt of 6°, a Patterson projection which has high intensities where they should be low (at A, points midway between pairs of adjacent molecules) and low intensities where they should be high (at B, points midway between trios of adjacent molecules) proves little in view of the fact that less than 27 per cent of the crystal has been considered6.
