J. L. BAIRD: Development of television. The discovery of the light-sensitive properties of selenium led to many schemes for the accomplishment of television. These schemes remained theoretical until 1926, when Baird succeeded in transmitting true images by television. An experimental television service with his apparatus was commenced by the B.B.C. in 1929 and continued until superseded by the present ultra-short wave transmissions. The various systems used for large screen television were discussed. The progress of colour television was described.
