Abstract
I. BEFORE it is possible to explain the highly complex 7 actions taking place in the destructive distillation of coal, it is important to have some definite idea of the nature of the raw material with which we have to deal; and although many attempts have been made; to gain an insight into the composition of coal, the wide variations in its characteristics, the difficulties attending any attempt to separate its constituents, and the ease with which the products of its decomposition undergo secondary changes at the temperatures employed in breaking it up, have prevented any very satisfactory solution of the problem being arrived at.
