Abstract
THE field of operations of the Smithsonian Institution is so extensive that it is impossible to survey adequately the work carried on in it. The liberality of the Institution has made many students of science acquainted with the researches and results of others, and has placed the whole world of scientific activity under an obligation. In addition, each of the departments under the direction of the Institution is a living centre of investigation, from which contributions to natural knowledge are continually emanating. These departments are the United States National Museum, the Bureau of American Ethnology, the International Exchanges, the National Zoological Park and Astrophysical Observatory.
