Abstract
IT is well known that the Newlands-Mendeleeff classification of the elements was preceded by the discoveries of certain numerical relations between the atomic weights of allied elements, due to Döbereiner, Dumas, and others; but what has been almost entirely ignored is the immense advance made by M. A. E. Béguyer, de Chancourtois,1 a French geologist of note, Professor at the École des Mines, who was the first to publish a list of all the known elements in the order of their atomic weights.
